#FlashbackFriday: Sriti Jha’s First Open Mic Performance Is Everything Woke And Wonderful

Sriti Jha aka Pragya of Kumkum Bhagya recently shared a post of her first performance at an open mic. Watch her bittersweet and raw poem here.

Sriti Jha's first open mic performance

Sriti Jha plays the role of a single mother to her daughter and her niece on Kumkum Bhagya. Her role of a middle class independent woman has won hearts all over the country. Off screen she is a spoken word poet who challenges stereotypes and expresses her feelings through her words and performances. Recently, Sriti Jha shared a post about her first time at an open mic performance at the Cuckoo Club in Bandra. She read her poem titled ‘Chudiyaan’.

Watch her get over her nerves and deliver a near perfect performance here.

Her poem talks about gender non-conformity. It tells the story of a young boy grappling with his own gender identity and how society pressures him into not wearing or behaving how he wanted. It ends on a bright and positive note with him accepting himself for being ‘Beyhadh Khoobsurat’ and being his own favourite.

Such was the power of her performance that even when she fumbled, the audience didn’t divert their attention. I should know that because I too had the good luck of being in the audience that evening. Watch the poem as a complete video here.

You can watch Sriti Jha live too where she performs poems at events organised by Kommune and Books On Toast. You might catch her with her bestie Maanvi Gagroo, whose movie 377: Ab Normal, is also streaming on ZEE5.
