Happy Birthday Sriti Jha! A Personal Ode To The Woman Behind The Most Popular TV Character

Sriti Jha has stolen hearts as Pragya on Kumkum Bhagya, here's an ode to her life outside the show which is full of books, travel and poetry.

Kumkum Bhagya actress Sriti Jha

Sriti Jha is a woman of contradictions; she speaks impeccable Hindi in Kumkum Bhagya and quotes Victorian English in her Instagram captions. She represents the older generation playing the role of a cool mom on TV and connects with the younger generation with her well-composed poems that she delivers with her trademark kind smile that you can find on the internet. Here’s an ode to this woman – she is two sides of the same coin

Dear Sriti,

It was the first time you were about to perform at a storytelling show in a small crowd at the hip crowd of Bandra. And that time the host introduced you as the star of Kumkum Bhagya and it drew a mild chuckle from the audience to suggest no one there watched the show. You laughed with them and took it in your stride. Then you read a story about a young transgender boy exploring his gender through fashion and leaving the audience on the verge of tears. That was my first impression of your a smiling unassuming assassin.

In the time that followed it would become my job to watch your show daily and only then I realised how much people really loved you and the character Pragya. I will have to say I like (not love) your character too. There are not enough cool moms on TV who will encourage their daughters for fashion shows and treat suicide attempts sensitively.

I don’t know how you manage to find so much time to travel, while being on of the biggest shows on TV. Your Instagram highlights go from Spain, Amsterdam and Berlin to Lonavala and Hampi. As you revealed in an interview recently your New Year resolution was to travel even more. Did you manage to keep that resolution?

You keep posting pictures of reading book by the beach and write your own Shashi Tharoor-like tongue-twisters. You performed at some of the biggest youth crowd events and charmed audiences with your poems. As a TV actress to speak about subjects like transgender rights and gay rights takes courage and it’s time someone appreciated it.

You are a star on TV but you manage to remain relatable with cute friendship appreciation posts, except your best friends are also stars like Maanvi Gagroo and Mouni Roy. While I always guessed that you were an old soul, you proved it by taking reading and knitting as hobbies. You managed to find poetry in knitting too.

Here’s wishing more power and poetry to you this year.
