Ravi Dubey and Nia Sharma became the talk of the town with their crackling chemistry in television drama Jamai Raja. The Zee TV show made everyone sit up straight and take notice of a son-in-law, came as a breath of fresh air at a time when showrunners had Indian television audience hooked to saas-bahu drama. Ravi played Siddharth and narrated the story from a son-in-law’s perspective and the exception paid off with high TRPs and immense popularity. Two years after the daily soap went off the air, Ashvini Yardi announced a web sequel titled Jamai 2.0 with #NiVi returning as #SidNi. Naturally, fans pinned their hopes on the ZEE5 Original and rooted for Ravi and Nia. As Jamai 2.0 started streaming on the OTT platform from 10 September 2019, here’s our review of the series.
Quickly walking you through the storyline – Jamai 2.0 stars Ravi as Siddharth Sharma, a stand-up comedian at a night club owned by Durga Devi/DD Patel, played by Achint Kaur. Sid joins DD’s club to get closer to her but is actually out to destroy DD. Nia reprises her role of Roshni, DD’s daughter. She is not a big fan of her businesswoman mother and this makes her a pawn in Sid’s plan to get to DD. Why and how Sid plans to seek revenge is for you to watch and find out!
Revenge is a dish best served cold, but not in Jamai 2.0. Sid is not one of those cold-blooded, callous men vying for vengeance. Ravi has brilliantly layered his character with a personality synonymous with his own, making it difficult for anyone to uncover Sid’s truth. If you don’t know Sid, he is a funny, charming boy-next-door who will delight you from the word go. He is smoldering hot, and a catch even DD’s best friends cannot resist! Speaking of hotness, beware, Nia might just melt your screens. Living up to her title of the third sexiest Asian woman, the actress makes you reach for a glass of cold water, more than once. Borrowing clothes from their own wardrobe is perhaps a masterstroke both Ravi and Nia used efficiently for it only keeps the lamp of Jamai Raja burning brighter and better.

Performance-wise, we have nothing new to say, because all of them – Ravi, Nia, and Achint enable an entertaining and engaging series, yet again. Jamai 2.0 uses a deck of cards to help the audience understand the positioning of its characters in this game of power, revenge, and money. DD is the self-acclaimed ‘Queen,’ Roshni is an ‘Ace’ while Sid is the ‘Joker.’ Don’t get on the bad side of either, you never know how the game turns out! Sanjay Swaraj returns to the franchise as Goswami, DD’s business-partner-turned-enemy. He meddles with Roshni’s mind after DD ousts him from all their collaborations, cunningly if we may add so. Suspense and mystery run watertight in the episodes streaming so far, backed by the supporting cast. Sudhanshu Pandey’s South-Indian accent as a cop Cheeram Murthy is pretty convincing while Varun Jain, Bobby Khanna, Pratik Dixit, Khatija Iqbal amongst others lend stunning stints as Ravi, Nia, and Achint power the show.
The picturesque locales of Puducherry add volumes of beauty to this Bollywood-style shot web show. The quality of production and cinematography is unlike any other Indian series in the genre. It’s almost like you are watching a film! Shashant Shah does a commendable job with providing enough room for all his characters to take a flight on their own, each passing the test with flying colours. There is nothing out of place or off here. Of course, Rubaroo makes you want to hang around for longer, while Ravi and Nia set #romancegoals on the screen with their bolder-than-before love saga.
Revenge thrillers can be a predictable(ish) genre, but you can’t possibly predict where Jamai 2.0 is headed. Expect the unexpected! But what we can assure is, it will only be an edgier, more unpredictable trip from here on.
