Hands down, one of the most loved shows on Indian television, Jodha Akbar should be on your must-watch list! The epic Hindi drama series stars Rajat Tokas and Paridhi Sharma in the titular lead, as Akbar and Jodha respectively. Based in the 16th century, the daily soap revolves around the political marriage between a Mughal Emperor Jalaluddin Akbar and a Rajput princess Jodha Bai. It focuses on how love blossoms between two opponents, despite differences of opinion, religious beliefs and political agendas and how their story changed the fate of India.

2. Jhansi Ki Rani

Rani Laxmi Bai aka Jhansi Ki Rani (the Queen of Jhansi) was a braveheart who laid down her life to protect the freedom of India. A historical drama by the same name, Jhansi Ki Rani, starring Ulka Gupta, Kratika Sengar, Sameer Dharmadhikari and Amit Pachori traced the journey of this warrior who is best remembered for her valour and courage.

Manikarnika (Manu) is married to the King of the Jhansi at the age of 14. Growing up, she despises the British Raj prevalent in the country, fights the Englishmen to win back independence for the nation. Binge-watch the serial here.

Interestingly, a biopic on the Rani Laxmi’s life, titled Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi was recently released. The film featured Kangana Ranaut in the titular lead and also marked Pavitra Rishta actress Ankita Lokhande’s Bollywood debut. Watch the trailer of the latest blockbuster here.

3. Swarajyarakshak Sambhaji

Swarajyarakshak Sambhaji is a Marathi period drama series that airs on Zee Marathi. The show revolves around the life of Sambhaji, son of the great Maratha warrior king, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Starring Dr Amol Kolhe as the titular lead, the serial features the highs and lows of Sambhaji, who went on to become one of the most ferocious kings in the Bhosale Maratha clan. He fought throughout his lifespan of 31 years.

4. Baaji

Another offering for Zee Marathi fans is Baaji. The action drama is set in the era when the Peshwas ruled the Maratha kingdom. It also gives impetus to the pressure and constant danger faced by the Marathas as the Britishers and the Nizams eyed the throne. Will they be able to conquer it?

5. Razia Sultan

And TV show Razia Sultan is the story of Razia, daughter of Sultan Iltutmish and Qutub Begum. Best remembered for her nobility and dynamic thoughts, Razia succeeded her father as the first woman ruler of the state of Delhi after his death. The serial also focuses on her marriage with Malik Altunia, and love affair besides tracing her journey from a princess to a Sultan
