“Kaafir is my heart,” Dia Mirza told us last week when the motion poster of Kaafir was released. The upcoming ZEE5 original series stars her as a Pakistani woman Kainaaz and marks the actress’ digital debut. Last seen in Sanju, the former Miss Asia Pacific described Kaafir as a very very special story, told by special people. Paired opposite Dia is television hottie Mohit Raina who was also a part of Vicky Kaushal’s Uri: The Surgical Strike earlier this year. The teaser of Kaafir features Mohit as a journalist trying to interview two females. One of them is a cute little girl, Seher.
In case you missed watching the teaser, catch it here:
The nearly one-minute long video opens with shots of beautiful snow-clad mountains in Himachal Pradesh, where the series has been shot extensively. We are then introduced to Mohit’s character of a journalist who comes across the story of Pakistani women in jail. He is seen trying to get permission to interview Kainaaz (Dia) and her gorgeous daughter. The persuasion invokes a sense of a harrowing story for it is not every day you see anyone struggle that hard to meet a stranger. “Wo bahar nahi aa sakti, kyunki wo Pakistani hai na,” says Seher to the journalist. Darkness looms at large, around Kainaaz who is seen entering a meeting area divided by a fence. On the opposite side, standing is the journalist, with a wide stare and too many questions running on his mind seemingly.
Kaafir, directed by Sonam Nair, has been inspired by true events. Renowned screenwriter Bhavani Iyer who has written the screenplay for critically acclaimed hits like Lootera, Guzaarish, Raazi amongst others has written the web show. Produced by Siddharth and Sapna Malhotra, Kaafir will stream on ZEE5 15 June 2019 onwards!
