1. The Mithali Raj biopic
Bollywood is all game for biopics, especially in telling the real-life stories of Indian sports personalities. The industry picked up on the trend big time after the humongous success of Dangal, MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, Mary Kom and other films. We have compiled a list of ten sports biopics that will see the light of the day in the coming months!
Mithali Raj boasts of several firsts in her kitty. She is the first player to score seven consecutive 50s in ODIs and is also the first cricketer from India (either male or female) to score 2000 runs in T20Is, and also became the first woman to play in 200 ODI matches. A biopic on the captain of the Indian women’s cricket team in Tests and ODI was announced and on Wednesday, 29 January 2020, the first look from the film starring Taapsee Pannu as Mithali was released. Titled Shabaash Mithu, the movie is set to release on 5 February 2021.
2. The Satnam Singh Bhamara biopic
Last year, ZEE5 announced an original film based on the life of Satnam Singh Bhamara. The movie will be produced by Zee Studios. The film chronicles and celebrates the inspirational story of the iconic Indian basketball player. Be prepared for a slam dunk!
3. The PV Sindhu biopic
24-year-old shuttler PV Sindhu became the first-ever Indian Badminton player to strike gold at the World Championship, recently. Sonu Sood has reportedly bought rights to make a biopic on Sindhu and Deepika Padukone is in the front line to play sports star.
Sindhu too expressed her desire to have Deepika essay her in the biopic. “Would definitely want Deepika Padukone to play the character. She had played the game and is a good actor too. But then, the makers would take the final decision,” she told a leading daily. For those not in the know, Deepika is the daughter of former Badminton player Prakash Padukone and is a national lever shuttler herself.
4. The Saina Nehwal biopic
A sports biopic on India’s 1983 historic Cricket World Cup victory if already underway. Helmed by Kabir Khan, Ranveer Singh will be seen as Kapil Dev in the film slated to release in theatres on 10 April 2020. Ranveer’s real-life wife Deepika Padukone shall be seen as reel better half, Kapil Dev’s spouse Romi.
6. The Pullela Gopichand biopic
Former Badminton player Pullela Gopichand won the All England Open Badminton Championships in 2001 becoming the second Indian to achieve this feat after Prakash Padukone. Winner of the Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award, and the Padma Bhushan, Gopichand has coached and produced several leading Indian shuttlers including Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu.
A biopic has already been announced on him and it will be a bilingual film reportedly.
7. The Dhyan Chand biopic
Filmmaker Pooja Shetty had announced a film on the life of hockey legend Dhyan Chand. Although Shah Rukh Khan and Varun Dhawan were reported to be approached for the role, the makers are yet to make an announcement.
8. The P.T. Usha biopic
A biopic on the iconic Indian athlete PT Usha will be helmed by director Revathy S. Varmha in English to be dubbed in four other languages, Hindi, Malayalam, Chinese and Russian. Names like Priyanka Chopra and Katrina Kaif were thrown up but Varmha ended speculations recently and is yet to make a formal announcement.
9. The Abhinav Bindra biopic
10. The Murlikant Petkar biopic
Kedarnath actor Sushant Singh Rajput is expected to headline the Murlikant Petkar biopic. Petkar is a differently-abled sportsman who won the gold at the 1970 Commonwealth Games and the Paralympics in Germany in 1972.
11. The Bhaichung Bhutia biopic
A biopic on Indian footballer Bhaichung Bhutia was announced last year. It will be directed by filmmaker Anand Kumar, of Delhi Heights (2007) and Zila Ghaziabad (2013) fame while Prashant Pandey (writer of Sarkar, Poorna and Raid) shall pen it.
