New Zee TV show Hamari Bahu Silk revolves around Paakhi (Chahat Pandey), who works as a dubbing artist in sensuous movies. She finds herself torn between log kya kahenge and earning a livelihood for her family. The daily soap, undoubtedly, aims to debunk the stereotypes that society attaches to a woman. However, there are several women who lead by example and have broken the mold to chase their passion and dreams.
When speaking of females who shattered the glass ceiling, the list is not complete without global icon Priyanka Chopra. She was bullied in childhood for being dark and even told that “Indians aren’t cut out for Hollywood” as revealed to a leading magazine. However, our desi girl turned it into her strength and the rest as they say, is history.

3. Reshma Pathan
Remember that scene from the film Sholay where Hema Malini goes “Chal Dhanno, aaj teri Basanti ki ijjat ka sawaal hai.” The dangerous tanga scene was performed by a stuntwoman Reshma Pathan who even landed in the hospital owing to serious injuries! In a male-dominated arena, Reshma held her own and became the ‘Sholay Girl’ of cinema in India.
4. Geeta Phogat and Babita Phogat
Everyone is aware of the Phogat sisters‘ struggle to success. Born in a Jat family, to Mahavir Singh Phogat, a former wrestler himself and a Dronacharya Award recipient, Geeta and Babita were coached by their father to glory. Despite being condemned by the community to train girls as wrestlers, the Phogat family stands tall overall stereotypes meant to pull down a female.
5. Mary Kom
Mary Kom is the only woman to become World Amateur Boxing champion for a record six times. She is also the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the seven world championships. Initially, Kom hid her interest in wrestling from her own father, who believed it could ruin her face and chances of marriage thereafter. Coming from a humble background, Mary definitely fought the odds and didn’t succumb to anything but her passion.
Her life inspired Omung Kumar’s film by her name, wherein Priyanka played Mary.
6. Ekta Kapoor
Ekta Kapoor had her first show running and gaining popularity when she was just 19! With life throwing curveballs one after the other, Ekta kept testing new waters and went for a straight dive with her creativity. Thanks to her ‘K’ serials, a new era had dawned upon the world of television in the 2000s. Thereafter, her choices in films and web series have been impeccably correct. Not only did she rewrite the saas-bahu drama, but she also reinvented the space for more genres to seep in like comedy, horror, supernatural series etc.
7. Kiran Bedi
Kiran Bedi is the first woman to join the Indian Police Service (IPS). In class 9, she changed her school because it didn’t offer science education and instead groomed girls to become housewives. During her IPS career, Bedi also earned a law degree and a Ph.D. She has been functional in bringing down the crime rates in Delhi and also reforming the Tihar jail.
