Shikhar Dhawan, the proud Gabbar of the Indian National Cricket Team, started playing cricket at the tender age of 11-12. However, it wasn’t until he played for India in the 2004 Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh that he believed he would play internationally one day. It is mention worthy that Dhawan finished as the leading run-scorer of the tournament. He still holds the record of scoring three centuries (a total of 505 runs) from seven innings in a single tournament. A star-performer that he is, Dhawan recently made an appearance on Zing Game On show, hosted by Karan Wahi who was Dhawan’s schoolmate.
In the first warm-up round, Dhawan revealed that he was not great at academics at all while his sister was a topper. Speaking about the same, he said, “Shauk nahi tha, mujhe samajh nahi aati thi. Bichari wo (Dhawan’s sister) 3-4 ghante mehnat karaye, main kar bhi leta tha par baadme bhul jaata tha.” Karan added to the same and shared, “During a Maths examination, the time alloted was 3 hours. Within half an hour or so, Shikhar got up and told the teacher that he was done with the exam. When the results were announced, it was revealed that Shikhar had copied all the questions fron the question paper onto the answer sheet and written at the end of it ‘For all answers refer to NCERT books, thank you so much Shikhar Dhawan.'” In his defence, Dhawan said, “Yaar ab kuch aata toh tha nahi, ab aaya hai toh likhe rahe. Main cheating bhi karna chahu toh aage jo friend baitha tha wo bhi fail hota tha.”
Karan further quizzed Dhawan on Virat naming him as his bestie from the Indian cricket team. “Hum dono ka sense of humour same hai. Bachpan se saath rahe hai, wo mujhse 2-3 saal chota bhi. Main Chikoo se puchta hoon kabhi ki batting ka kya hai, he has achieved a lot, I try to understand. I really look upto him,” Dhawan commented.
Shikhar also revealed how he got the nickname Gabbar. It was during one of the Ranji Trophy matches that his coach came up with it because he’d shout a lot. Also, his during his Test debut he made a record 187 runs and ever since he is popularly known as Gabbar. When asked who after him is the Gabbar in the team, Dhawan named Rohit Sharma whereas Cheteshwar Pujara is ‘Thakur’ (Sholay fame). Rishabh Pant is the Basanti of the team.
In the later segment, we saw Dhawan’s father Mahendra Pal Dhawan and Karan’s parents Arun Wahi and Veena Wahi join the boys on the show. A fun banter ensued as Karan’s mom was also the Vice Principal of St. Mark’s Senior Secondary Public School in Meera bagh, Delhi, where both Karan and Shikhar studied. “The naughtiest child you must have ever seen in life was Shikhar Dhawan. Duniya mein kisise darein na darein, ye toh darta tha. Mera beta bhi darta tha,” she said.
