Bollywood’s very first spin-off Naam Shabana traces how Shabana Khan became a spy agent, as seen in Neeraj Pandey’s Baby. The latter starred Akshay Kumar in the lead and featured Taapsee Pannu in a 20-minute role. The positive response to this brief appearance sparked the idea of a backstory for Taapsee’s character, Shabana. But a report by a leading news agency suggests that the character of Shabana is based on a real-life undercover female agent.
The report states that an ex-intelligence officer filled Neeraj in on the spy and every related detail. It was this information that helped the makers add a touch of realism to Taapsee’s role. Another report, by a leading tabloid, too suggests that Naam Shabana is based on a female RAW agent who was hired as a honey trap. However, there was no official word from the makers of the movie about a real-life spy agent becoming the basis for Naam Shabana.
Talking about how she landed Naam Shabana, Taapsee revealed to a leading entertainment news portal, “Naam Shabana was like a bonus I got after Baby. Earlier, it was never on the cards. I literally forced myself in the film (Baby). I told the casting director to help me meet Neeraj Pandey for an audition and look test. It was at the last moment they got me into the film and it was just a 20-minute role. My character was noticed and due to the response it got, Neeraj Sir started thinking, and that is how he wrote a new film,” she informs.
Written by Neeraj Panday, Naam Shabana has been directed by Shivam Nair and produced by Plan C Studios. Besides Akshay, the action thriller boasts of cameo appearances by Anupam Kher and Danny Denzongpa, who were also seen in Baby. Manoj Bajpayee and south actor Prithviraj Sukumaran are new additions to the star cast.
